I did'nt know you could sew! And knitting too! Wow, really! But then again, like in many other areas, you start doing something you have never done before and it usually turns out brilliant (after some trials and errors)! I am soooo very proud of you, my extremely talented son! <3 But I guess I am biased. ;) You must have picked up a little something from me over the years! ^^ At least, that's what I hope for! So... If I want something sewn, I can call you and you will fix it for me? Pretty pretty pretty please? :) xoxo /Mom

Wait, one question - what sort of fabric are you using for the robes? Most of the fabric stores by me have closed - which is incredibly irksome - but I'm going to be working in Manhattan over the summer and I can find the fabric I'll need there.

I don't know exactly wha fabric it is, but I could ask at the shop where I'll buy it. The black fabric is some plain black thing. I have no idea what material it is from. The lining is a blue fabric with a silky/satiny feel to it. The lady at the shop recommended them, so I didn't think to ask many questions and I don't remember what she answered to the ones I did ask xD Nevertheless, I will provide more info when I have actually bought the fabrics. I don't think that'll be until next month though.

Oh, cool! :) I'm looking forward to the next blog post. It's always good to listen to the people who work in the shops you go to, they usually know best. :giggle: If I ever get my robes finished, I'll be sure to post it and give you credit for helping me out. :)

I think that your patterns for the robes were PERFECT. I've been searching for a good pattern that was simple, and this really is just perfect.

Also, I was sorted into Ravenclaw on Pottermore and now have to transform my room/cosplay outfits from Slytherin to Ravenclaw. :) This is a great blog post, for any of the houses, and I'm definitely going to add you to my watch list. :)

Well, I don't know how much the "chick" part will make it easier, since the only difference is that you have a slkirt and stockings instead of trousers ;D (unless you go with the whole "girls are better at sewing than boys" nonsense, but I don't believe in that ;D)

I think the Hufflepuff thing will make it easier though, because you don't have to search endlessly for stuff in a colour that no one remembers as the original canon anymore xD.

oh no its just i dont need the belt, and trousers are hard to find in good lengths if your like my brother(haha no boys can sew just as good as girls. well that is if they try, and im not saying everyone can sew like a pro)

X3 yeah yellow and black are easy to find, because well you can find any colour with black now a days right? wait what original canon?
Reply
:iconinspirement:
Inspirement Featured By Owner Jul 2, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Oh yes, I pointed the belt out, didn't I? ;D About trousers, that's no problem for me. At least not jeans. I've only even bough one pair of suit pants, so I don't know much about that xD

Yes, I like to think I'm quite good at sewing. Actually, most creative things, like arts and crafts, seem to come naturally to me (except this blasted knitting xD).

In the books, Ravenclaw's colours were blue and silver, but for some reason that I have yet to understand they changed it to blue and silver in the movies. They also changed the mascot from the eagle it is in the books to a raven. So by original canon, I mean book canon, which differs from the movie canon, which seems to be the only one people remember when it comes to Ravenclaw's house colours.

Yeah im nto to good at sewingbtu im learning C: and yeah i like arts and crafs(i can knit while watching tv, im just that skilled XD)

Well it made sence to change the mascot to a raven, it is RAVENclaw and yeah i like the movies becaus i started watching them when i was 8, i couldnt comprehend the books at that time

Haha, okay xD Mine are always a bit long, but I like it that way ;D

That's good =) And if you didn't like arts and crafts, I don't think you'd be at this page to begin with, so I'm just assuming that everyone on this site likes the arts in some way or form ;D I can't knit to save my life yet xD

Yes, that's true, but the raven looks like a crow xD At least on the movie crest. The eagle is so much more majestic. But of course, if we should have a bird to represent our wisdon, I would have chosen an owl ;DBut Rowling chose the Eagle, and I don't care what Warner Bros thinks, if Rowling chose an eagle, it is an eagle xD

I think I was around ten when I read the first book. My most pronounced memory though, is reading the end of the second task of the tournament in GoF. I was scared to death that Harry'd drown every time I read that part xD I think part of me is glad that I didn't read the rest of the books after that until just a few years ago xD

tee hee yeah but whats the difference between crows and ravens to begin with? yes eagles are oh it could of been and golden eagle Xb owls are intelligent

oh cool XD iw as going to do the first book for a project at school then my teach was like"you cant do books that were made into movies" i ws like" your kidding me!!" oh haha wel he had gillyweed XD

Well, I live in this really small town and I'm not sure we have anything like that here xD I could look around though ;D

I don't get that bit about the eagle... did you slip on the keys or something? xD And... golden eagle?

I mean the part where the gilyweed loses its power and Harry can't breathe and there are the Grindylows trying to drag him down or something. I was terrified xD

Regarding the sweater: Why not search around for someone who knits and pay to have one made for you? It shouldn't be too hard to find yarn in the right colors. It won't necessarily be cheap, but do true fans count the cost?

(Yes, we do!)

Well, the sweater is no problem, as I have decided to buy the one from Whimsic Alley. And as I'm on a tight budget here, being unemployed and everything, I really can't afford a custom-made sweater. Next to the costs for the materials for the robes, the sweater will probably be the most expensive piece of this costume already, and I would like to keep it down as much as possible.

No, the real problem here is the tie...

There must be places on the web where one can get ties in an enormous range of colors. "Bronze" actually gives you a fairly wide color range.

Inspirement Featured By Owner Jun 29, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Yeah, but the "bronze" must match the colour used in the rest of the costume, otherwise it will look weird =/ But yeah, I'll keep looking. Hopefully I'll strike gold somewhere... or bronze, as it were xD

I need to make myself some Slytherin robes some time. Looking forward to see your end result! And for the tie, try scouting second hand stores, they often have a lot of ties and sometimes you get lucky. The official movie ties has the raven crest on them and are honestly quite ugly in my opinion...

Thank you :D

Second hand stores... that's a good idea! Unfortunately, I'm not sure how easy it wwould be to find anything that's similar to the movie ties that's in the right colours. Especially since I live in a small town, and second hand stores aren't very plentiful =/ With my luck, I'd probably find one with the right pattern and the right colours, only inverted, with a bronze base and blue stripes xD

P.S. I looked at your profile (something that's only reserved for people who leave good reviews) and I noticed that you are a Swede too! :D I must say, we have some things in common too, most of all the Potter thing, but I too love Sci-Fi (though I'm more the Star Wars type. I have not seen a lot of Star Trek. I enjoyed the 2009 movie though xD) and I love Burtom movies! In addition to that, I saw in your journal that you'll be at NärCon! I would love to visit a Con, but I'm not very into the whole Japanese thing that that con seems to be about, which is a shame as it's really close to where I live =/ I'm considering going to Swecon this year though :D

Most of the ties you find in second hand stores are horribly ugly but I did find quite a good Slytherin tie that way. But that was after about a year of scouting. Perhaps you could buy a plain blue tie and try drawing stripes on it? Not sure if it would end up looking good though xD

I got into Star Trek quite resently actually (well, about half a year ago) and still haven't seen the whole original series, but I highly recomend it! I thought about going to swecon when it was in Stockholm last year but it didn't happen. Haven't read anything by those who's coming this year :/

Yes, that is what I was contemplating, but I would buy one of those blue/silver Ravenclaw ties (not the official one, because that one has the ugly movie crest on it. Also, it's the most expensive (I think)) and paint the silver stripes bronze, so I know I have the sizr and spacing of the stripes right :D

I actually watched the first fifteen episodes of the original series, but they never hooked me. I used to have all seasons on my computer, but as I was running out of harddrive space, I had to delete them to make room for other stuff, as I didn't watch them anyway. I'm thinking of giving the newer series a try though, but I haven't gotten around to do that yet.

I haven't read anything by them either, but it would be a fun experience anyway I think. Or at least I hope so :D

I've always had the impression that the ties without the crest were more expensive, but maybe I've been looking at the wrong sites. Anyway, I think buying one that's just blue probably would be cheaper, but perhaps it's worth it.

Ah, well no need to watch it if you don't enjoy it. I kinda like the 60's feel that the original series has x)

And you're probably right, I mean there ought to be some cool people there at least :D

Oh, and I see that you've bought yarn now! Lycka till med stickandet!

Yes, I think they are, weren't that what I said? At least that what I meant xD It would make sense, seeing as they are the official ones and Warner Bros are more likely to want to milk us fans on our money than those shops selling the unofficial stuff, because they are run by fellow fans (I hope xD). Yes, a plain blue one would probably be cheaper. I have a friends who's got the official ties (Gryffindor and Slytherin) so maybe they can be kind enough to measure the spaces and sizes of the sripes so I can do the same xD (I'm kind of making my cosplay to match theirs. Not exactly though ;P).

My brother will likely come with me if I go, and he's cool at least xD

Tack, men de e svårt! xD (fan va konstigt de känns o skriva på svenska här xD Men ja tycker engelska e lite mer respektfullt mot andra användare så ja fortsätter me de ;D). Yeah, the knitting is hard. Still haven't gotten the hang of it really, but there's afew more months left until I will need it, so hopefully I will have gotten it by then (as the kind of person who constantly strives for perfection, it's even harder to lear, because I keep starting oven with the slightest error xD)

You crochet, right? :D

You misunderstood me, I meant the other way around xD
I think it's because I came across official ties without the crest and those where more expencive than the ones with it. (Wich would make sense since they're way better looking).

I managed to forget the word knitting and didn't want to spend time on looking it up heh.
And yes, I crochet! It's really fun and quite easy once you've got the hang on it. I've knitted a few scarves (well, two at least) too, but only using one colour. I don't remember how long they took to make, but I think you should be able to finish yours in time. I've been thinking of knitting a Slytherin scarf since th sci-fi bookstore never stocks up on them, but I'm afraid I won't be happy with it and want to buy one anyway x.x
